Guardians began life as regular Hunters, but after the breaking of the seal in August 2008, things changed. Those who awoke to new abilities-- and a changed physical form-- were the direct descendants of a group of women in the Geldon Kingdom, who devoted their lives to guarding the Purity Princess. These women were picked for this duty for their high rank, and for their mastery of their element. But despite their awesome powers, the original Guardians failed. Their legacy of protection was to be passed, along with their genes, to the next generations.
However, a group of Guardians who survived the fall of the Geldon Kingdom had other plans. These women bound the ability of utilizing the Guardian-state (the mystical transformation that allows a Guardian to use magic, by drawing upon the animal totem bound to each) in a seal. This was a last ditch effort to protect the Purity Princess, whom the Faen proclaimed would appear in the future era. Stripped of their powers, all the Guardians were once again Hunters, and lived on to the rest of their days.
A few of the original lines have survived to modern times, and most have been drawn to Sunset City in the last few generations. Several of these men and women operated as Hunters, instinctually protecting-- or seeking to destroy-- the city's numerous seals, but none awoke to their true potential.
At the start of the major campaign of the game, the descendants of the original Guardians are revealed after the breaking of the city's major seal. Those who had previous awoken to their Hunter potential were no longer able to wield magic— unless their totem has been activated, and they achieve the proper mystical transformation.
Feb 20, 2008 A Note on Guardian Inheritance
Only the heir (male or female) of the primary line may be activated as a Guardian. So, although Mara and Lynn are cousins, Lynn is the heir of the primary line and thus became the Guardian (never mind the fact Mara is not of the Rabbit line). In the unique blending of a deep spiritual connection to a raw bloodline, upon the death of a Guardian, the next in line will gain the totem and the burden of protection that comes with it.
