Sunset City

Taking the place of Monterey, California, Sunset City boasts a slightly larger population, thanks in part to the surge in Hunters and their families since the Gold Rush.  The year is now 2008, and so technology and social atmosphere is virtually the same as in our world.

Sunset City has a thriving mall culture, a slew of festivals, and a ton of hotels. It acts as the county seat for the fictional Sunset Valley County, but is notorious for a chronic disconnect from the agricultural towns to the north and east. Thanks to the Silicon Valley explosion, the city hosts a great deal of transplanted wealth in the tech industry, and has a much higher standard of living than many towns along the pacific coast. There are many old money families who have dominated city politics since the founding of the town during the Gold Rush. Much of the old money was made in agriculture.

As an homage to the city's early history with films, Sunset City is also the home to a famous film festival that takes place every year in October. There is also PACIFICON, a hybrid of Comicon and Dragoncon, which occurs in mid-September. The Wharf and College District are host to frequent festivals and entertainments.

In this parallel universe, the UC:SC resides within Sunset City, taking the place of University of California: Santa Cruz. Although there are three high schools, to simplify the game we like to keep the majority of the high school Hunters in Sunset City High School.

The city also boasts a well used public transportation system, the SVTA (Sunset Valley Transit Authority). SVTA runs buses all the way to San Jose in the north (about an hour and a half trip), Salinas to the east, and Big Sur to the south. There is also a shuttle to the tiny airport at the outskirts of town, which due to limitations of the runway, only allows small aircraft.

Sunset City Locations

College District

The College District is the northernmost region of Sunset City proper. As expected with its name, the District features the University, but it is also home to several middle class neighborhoods. And although the area to the north is claimed by the College District, the  growing population of suburbs taking the place of the abandoned military base is popularly called the Boonies District.

Pier District

  • The Sunset City Marina & Wharf
  • Bay Aquarium
The Pier District is the smallest of Sunset City's Districts, consisting of an area only two miles long-- and a significant
portion of that is not over land, but on the wharf above the bay.  The District offers no housing and is home to a strip mall, tourist traps, the Marina & Wharf, and the Bay Aquarium.

Sea Side District

Sea Side is the southernmost bay-hugging District and offers a variety of housing neighborhoods. The apartments are clustered to the east by Downtown, while the more expensive neighborhoods are to the west, closest to the ocean. Many of the neighborhoods act as miniature communities, similar to the neighborhoods of San Francisco.

Down's Town (District-- inland)

  • Sunset City High School
  • Police Station
  • Down's Town Shopping Mall
  • Swallow's Nest
  • Magic Mirror Books
  • Sunset City Ironworks
  • The Brownstone Studios
  • Sunset City General Hospital
One of the unique features to Sunset City is their Down's Town District, which fought to remain an independent town for several years. In recent years it has consolidated into a proper downtown region when most of the city services moved to the area and the shopping centers upgraded to a more urban feel. The lowest income homes in Sunset City tend to line the east.

Down's Town stretches east of mid-College District to mid-Sea Side District.

Industrial Park (District)
  • Sunset Valley Convention Center & The Fairgrounds
  • Happy Acres Retirement Home
The Industrial Park is south of Sea Side and Down's Town and unofficially stretches into the next town, Crescent Heights. There are several beaches in the area, but the remaining land is heavily wooded and makes for excellent hiking opportunities.
