Rae

Basics

Name: Raeka Soleil Orlov: Raeka, "Unique"; Soleil, "Sunshine"; Orlov, "Eagle". Her account name on GKMMORPG is hehe_wuti, Hopi for "Warrior Mother Spirit."
Age/Birthdate/Zodiac: 23/ March 23rd / Aries Sun, Libra Moon, Cancer Rising

Occupation/School/Usual Hang Outs:
Rae works as an RA, presiding over the 2nd floor of the Haystacks. She has put off leaving college two years now, covering her hesitation by changing majors endlessly. You will rarely find Rae off campus-- she's come to realize that with so many Hunters around, she's loads safer sticking close to home than out wandering about.  When she does leave campus, she sticks to very heavily populated and also to areas very close to the campus, like local bars (she has been to the Fubar a few times, and is friendly with the co-owner there, Lou).  You will not see her walking out past sunset, however.

Skills, Hobbies:
  • Keeping Track of Her Kids (RA Superpowers!).
  • Uncanny raiding skills at GKMMORPG.
  • Undefeated champion in Mario Kart.  Similarly aims to dominate in any other video game she plays.
  • Devouring obscure television, film, and literary sources.
  • Instigating various dorm shenanigans.
  • Uncanny Sensing of Freshman Needing a Shoulder to Cry On.
  • By way of ever changing Majors, quite possibly could be 7-Day champion on Jeopardy!-- or would be if she wasn't afraid of getting eaten on-set.  (You can hear her yelling at her television at 7 PM every night, however.)
Likes:
  • Anything Remotely Native American. She's got the blood, thanks to a great-great-grandmother, but that isn't saying a lot. As a young girl, she became obsessed with anything remotely related to that tribe, and the obsession just got worse as she grew older. There was something important about her ancestor's people, something just on the tip of her tongue...  Anyway, she suffers acutely from exoticism and overly self-identifies with that aspect of her heritage. Which is hilarious, because the marriage of her great-great grandparents is why she's not a Hunter XD. But yes, Rae does a lot of painful misapropriations and drunken!rain dancing. She means well, but...
  • Public Speaking. And they want her to run for student council? HA. Much better one-to-one.
  • Being an RA. She's a little Queen and you are all her minions. Instant respect!
  • Decorating her tiny dorm room.  Rich fabrics to create the illusion of the walls being a 'tent.' The effect is beautiful, as she picked exotic, warm colors in different textures, like a satin sparkling blue sari layered between a crimson velvet and a saffron linen.
  • GKMMORPG (She has a ridiculous amount of characters)
  • Late August-December; Late January-May. Yes, she loves school. Don't be a hater. And if she wasn't slightly afraid of children, teaching elementary or middle school would be the perfect career for her.  Rae even applies to stay at the campus during the winter and summer breaks, normally to help train incoming RAs and watch over the summer residents.
  • Natural Remedies. She's a Vitamin Shoppe regular-- the girl's got more supplements than anyone else in the world. I might be exaggerating just a bit-- I'm sure there might be one or two people in the world with more. Maybe.
Dislikes:
  • Leaving Campus Unaccompanied By Conveniently Grabbed Hunter
  • The fact she knows there's stuff going on she doesn't understand
  • That feeling that if she just tried harder, she'd know what was bothering her so much
  • Being away from her family
  • Being with her family for more than a week (okay Dad, I get it! Everyone else is out of college already! And I don't care if half my sisters are married already!)
  • The East Coast. She might have been born in Mass, but she's a California girl through and through. Plus, it sucks they get her TV shows first. :P
  • Having to give in and go to the doctor.
  • That her abilities haven't won her the lottery yet. She tries, you guys, so damn hard.
  • The Ocean. Okay, maybe she's not the perfect California girl, but dude, FISH POOP IN THERE. (And she's pretty sure there's nasty stuff lurking just beneath the waves. AND HAVE YOU SEEN JAWS? IT COULD TOTALLY HAPPEN. I MEAN, IF LINT TURNS INTO MONSTERS AND TRIES TO EAT HER PRECIOUS DORMBABIES...).

Timeline:

  • Because Rae's timeline starts WAY before she's born!
  • 1774:  a young Ohlone orphan, last PPcarrier in the Ichxenta triblet, is baptized at the Mission San Carlos Borromeo. She later marries a Spaniard and the line continues, though knowledge of their heritage is lost.
  • 1848/1849: A branch of the Orlovs immigrate to the United States & settle in California, searching for gold (and running from the trouble their Hunting always brings). The family is soon beset with tragedy, and only one son, Ivan, survives.
  • 1852: The Orlovs settle in Sunset City, and Ivan marries a local Hunter, Maria. Both are unaware they are PPcarriers. Their union dilutes both bloodlines, and only one of their five children awaken as a Hunter.
  • 1868: Sick of all the bad luck Sunset City seems to bring the family, the Orlovs move east. No American Orlovs awaken as Hunters.
Now to Rae's personal timeline:
  • 1985: Rae is born in Boston, Mass, smack dab in the middle of a family of five. Her family is ridiculously normal, and she is the oldest girl.
  • 1990: While on a vacation to California, the family discovers they still own property in Sunset City. While investigating the lot, Rae stumbles across Geld artifact which she mistakenly believes is Ohlone in origin. Begins obsession with the Ohlone and her family history. (Plot point: the artifact, coupled with her then close proximity to the Purity Seal, allows her abilities to manifest, though her bloodline is too weak for her to awaken as a Hunter. She is the last PPcarrier in the Orlov family, and the bloodline would have died out completely if she hadn't found the artifact).
  • 2001: Graduates high school early with a ridiculously high GPA thanks mostly to her superior test taking abilities. Does not go to college, as entire family expects, but wanders around on a "Spirit Quest," traveling across the country. It is a good thing she doesn't look her age.
  • 2002: She ends up in Sunset City and decides to put down her roots where her family once lived. Rae manages to cheat the system and join the university during the spring semester and never, ever leaves.
  • 2003: Rae experiences her first interaction with the supernatural and probably would have died if random!Hunter hadn't come to her rescue.  Because she's not a Hunter, she doesn't actually understand what she sees, but quickly understands that her beloved Sunset City is pretty much Sunnydale, and she's definitely not Buffy. Oh snap. Around this time, she becomes aware of both her abilities and a few Hunters in the dorms. She sticks to them like glue, figuring doing so will keep her alive.
  • 2006: Rae becomes an RA, partially for money, partially to observe all the fricken Hunters that seem to be drawn to her, and partially because she's got a ridiculous ego and wants to be the Queen of the Floor.

--This Year (2008):
  • Almost gets eaten by Lint Monster. [Discovers the following Hunters: Lynn/Mara/Jane/Peter]
  • Various interactions with the Gumbies and Mara
  • Almost gets eaten by Book Wyrm & wheels Deon around (mobile safety). [Remembers Jane, 'figures' out she's a fire type.]
  • mid September: Realizes abillion Hunters will be going to Pacificon and decides it would TOTALLY be safe if she went, you know, to check out the GKMMORPG stuff... and accidentally makes things a whole lot worse for everyone when she runs into Brian.

Big Deals

Appearance:
  • Hair: She used to wear it very long (into a bundle of braids), but two years ago gave it a severe chop.  Now she keeps it medium-short, with her hair being considerably short near the back of her head and sloping longer towards the front of her face.  Her pair of forelocks are nearly shoulder-length in length, and shaped into long tapers.
  • Face: Her almond-shaped eyes have a bit of an inward slant to them, lending the most to Rae's exotic appearance. Not to say Rae looks outstandingly feminine though - her eyes are framed with barely-kempt long eyebrows, and generally she wears a fierce, determined expression.  It negates a lot of the natural softness to her features: her softly raised cheekbones, full muted pink lips, even the rounded tip to her low, broad nose.   To add to the more exotic angles of her face, Rae has an oval-heart face shape - longer up with her forehead, eyes and nose, then rounded cheekbones down to a sharp chin.  Her skin tone is dullish copper, and is relatively pallid due to the fact she avoids the sun.
  • Build: GOTTA HAVE HIPS.  Rae is the typical pear body-type, with a narrower shoulder and chest flaring out to fuller hips and thighs.  As a person who spends most of her existence indoors, Rae has very little muscle or tone, though the thicker nature of her bones and frame lends to more sturdiness than you'd expect.
  • Clothing: Rae really doesn't stretch much on her wardrobe.  She relies on heavy sweatpants, dark jeans, and camoflague cargos for her lower body, and sticks with solid colored tank tops (maaaaaaaybe a tee-shirt with a snarky line on it) for her top.  She generally dislikes sweaters and jackets, and owns a single gray SCSU hoodie that she seems to be in from November to March solid.
  • Other: Rae has three piercings - regular studs in her ears, and then a second bar piercing up in the cartiledge of her left ear.  By principle she refuses to wear makeup, save for the world's oldest tube of Burt's Bee's lip balm.  She tends towards wearing simple jewelry, mostly chord necklaces with a shark tooth or other hand-made natural products.  Her most prized piece, which she wears nearly all of the time, is a thin, curved bracelet made of bone, framed with black cord.
Personality:
  • Virtues: Natural manager, mama-bear tendencies, accepting, adept at advice-giving, cool as a cucumber in virtually any crisis.
  • Neutrals: Jack-of-all-trades master-of-none, snappy sense of humor, adaptive, absorbing, competitive.
  • Vices: Superiority complex, proud, manipulative tendency, self-isolationist, sometimes intense in a creepy way.

Blurb:

In another life, Rae would have been a very successful countess in charge of her own household and lands.  She carries herself with dignity and serenity, sports an iron-clad sense of confidence in herself, and even features eccentricies that offer 'color' to her personality, as her loyal subjects would tactfully put it.  And her subjects would be loyal and reverent, because she remains informed and interested in their lives.  She is both loved and feared by people who know her, yet either way, nobody in the world has a true idea of the other, paranormal dimension of life Rae has to deal with every day.

Those who love and admire Rae would immediately cite her caring attributes as a major reason.  Above anything else, Rae is community-minded, and cares very much for the happiness and serenity of people around her.  She is mindful that she cannot heal a person's life for them, but she is remarkably generous with her time, advice, and her shoulder for crying on.   She especially takes a shining to 'runts' of any given community she is in, and invests a lot of herself personally into the improvement of that person's situation.  Often she becomes a sort of 'soccer mom' to other people, supporting them in what they do when nobody else might.   Her room is considered a safe-haven in the Haystacks...so long as Rae isn't absorbed in her computer game.  Then it is safe with the exception of the occasional iced tea can tossed across the room.

Those who fear Rae normally would accuse her of being haughty and superior in attitude.  It is true that Rae is well-learned and has a lot of experiences from traveling across-country, but unfortunately Rae has the habit of believing that she is right, infallibly, and her pride doesn't like learning that she was wrong on any given issue.  Playing Jeopardy or Scrabble against her is nothing short of a nightmare of nitpicking and crowing.  She doesn't take well to jabs against her pride and ego, and might not recognize a well-natured joke as a joke until too late.  She also gets a little bit too defensive about her 'territory' - even people using her GKMMORPG server without permission will feel her wrath.

To be fair, Rae's negative traits have been exaggerated by the recent development of vivid premonitions detailing battles between people she knows (particularly her Dorm Babies) against terrifying monsters.  The same monsters lurk in her dreams of a long-dead kingdom, and her dreams always end with one posed to kill her.  These used to be far and few between, but now she encounters them on a nightly basis.  Rae rarely ever leaves the college campus, and is loathe to go even outside her dorm building past sunset.  She gets absorbed in GKMMORPG not only to feel a sense of power in a situation she is otherwise a victim to, but also to avoid sleeping.  But the visions are getting stronger and stronger, and soon Rae will hit a point where she either has to step forward and take responsibilty for her premonitions, or to allow Hunters to keep on fighting and dying while she hides safe in the background.

The Other Side

Elemental Control: Energy:Rays of Light

Abilities:
  • Tip of Your Tongue Visions: Rae isn't a Hunter. In fact, it has been over a century since anyone in her family has awakened as a Hunter.  Thanks to the cracking of the Purity Seal and a Geldish artifact, Rae does have access to passive, secondary Hunter abilities. While she cannot control her native element, when she sees 'through' beams of light she gains limited knowledge of a person near her's immediate future. Unfortunately, rarely is this very clear, and often leaves her with a troubling sense that there's something on the tip of her tongue, something terribly important, but she just can't quite figure out what the hell it is. This bugs her quite a bit.
  • Daemon Tracking: Once upon a time, the Orlov's were fricken amazing at Daemon Tracking. Unfortunately, Rae has none of her family's powers. What she does have is still pretty helpful. Sometimes, when she slowly wakes up in the morning, eyes just barely open to the harsh morning sunlight, she senses the precise location of daemons, hunters, jinn, and guardians around her, all in about a mile radius. The trouble is, she has a devil of a time figuring out what is what, and daemons have a bad habit of moving after she sees their location.  This skill, btw, is how she was able to identify the Hunters living in the Haystacks.
  • Wards and Seals: Rae is absolutely useless when it comes to Wards and Seals because she's not a Hunter. Well, not absolutely useless-- she can sense Seals. She's actually tracked a few down over the years, including the Purity Seal that made such a mess of things when it was cracked. Due to being a PPcarrier and a lack of a Hunter signature, Rae is usually able to get up close to seals without any adverse effects (or scaring the mobile ones away).

Type of Hunter: Rae is not a Hunter, though she is a Purifier. This means that while she can get the input of information regarding Hunting, such as sensing daemons, recieving visions, and knowing ward/seal locations, she has no ability to output her powers.

As one half of the Purity Princess duo, she is the Mind while Brian is the Form.  Brian has the powers, while Rae has the information. Brian is the beauty and charm of the Princess, while Rae is the leadership and the queeny attitude.  What makes Rae so important, and what makes her necessary to protect, is all of the untapped knowledge of the Purity Princess that she possesses.  Rae holds within her a reserve of information pertaining to the Purity Princess's true abilities, but as of yet no means of accessing that information or use it.

Relic: Not so much a relic as it is an artifact, Rae's curved bone bracelet is actually an artifact dating all the way back to the original Purity Princess.  The bracelet used to be a really sparkly, ornate affair, but after so many centuries it has been worn down to what looks like smooth ivory.  The bracelet is what jump-started Rae's visions, and is perhaps the key to unlocking further capabilities in her.

Band: Technically, she's part of the Gumbies, if only because she helps them the most. Kind of hard not too, since she's the RA for most of them ^.^;;
