The Way Jinn Work
« on: July 25, 2009, 09:37:36 PM »
The better to clear up confusion (and maybe get s'more Jinn characters, heh heh), the most basic explanation of Jinn is this:  they are human-daemon symbionts.

Hapless innocents who are possessed by daemons or seedlings wind up under their control.  Jinn are different: they are either fully autonomous, or have blended mentally with their daemon somehow; in either case, they are not oblivious, like victims of possession.

Copypasta follows:

Ren 54m4: my understanding is that [Jinn] are descendants (usually) of Geldons who assimilated daemons
Ren 54m4: tho 'assimilated' isn't really the word i want
Ren 54m4: more like, they were possessed, but kept their own minds?  or worked out a deal such that the human got cool wicked powers, and the daemon got a host body
Ren 54m4: they can reproduce, but only within a mortal timespan.  their offspring will inherit the daemon, or its offspring, however that works, but if there's immortality in the bloodline, it doesn't extend to the baby-making bits
Ren 54m4: of course, very old and powerful Jinn would have other ways of simply infecting others with their daemon, without passing on the DNA.  hence contagious werewolfism, vampirism, other
Ren 54m4: my Jinn's a vampire, but can only make other vampires from people with some Geldon heritage.  everyone else she infects is just her thrall [because they are daemon-possessed, in effect].

From chat tonight, we had a talk on the Jinn that made all of us realize we definitely need to fill in the blanks with the faction so we are all on the same side! After Bri and Ren left, we talked over some confusion over what the innate Jinn was and what I was meaning by overlap. Because Kol had a Kolspeak moment and probably added more confusion!

Bri, let me know if you want to talk the Jinn out more. The more questions we get, the better we can define what traits are unique to an individual Jinn or more common in their groups <3.

And this is the relevant convo:

Teasing out those "generic" Jinn things will really help solidify the faction

I think that's the thing that will also help Bri (and the rest of us) the most.  Just what IS the Jinn base.
kolicious 10:32
THAT is what I've been having the devil of a time figuring out
tatterpixie 10:32
I kinda understand, but then I've conversated a bit with Ren about Brian's Jinn taint
sappho13 10:32
Then it just becomes the same process as creating any other character.  When you're creating, say, a Knight - you read the Knights to see how others do it.  Then you avoid duplicates but go with the feel.
tatterpixie 10:32
Trying to nail down how it works
32:35
yeh, totally
kolicious 10:32
Yes
sappho13 10:33
I thought Jinn, basically, was a Geld descendant who was infected with a seedling and, somehow, between the will and the magic, reached a point of symbiosis.
33:14
I didn't think they were inherently good or evil.
kolicious 10:33
Oh no, seedlings have nothing to do with the Jinn
sappho13 10:34
... Then I'm lost.  XD
kolicious 10:34
Jinn are descendants of Gelds who, as the kingdom was being destroyed, got tainted by daemons who were trying to take them over, basically have meatsuits like daemons do in SPN
sappho13 10:34
Ooooh, okay.  So it's more partial possession than symbiosis.
kolicious 10:34
But they ended up fighting back, and suppressing the daemon. But they changed into awful supernatural beings
34:44
Yeah, it is more like the Buffy-verse Vamps
35:00
Where a bit of the original vamp is in there, but it isn't the full blown demon the original vamp was
35:11
Just a halfblood, or what have you
sappho13 10:35
Would the daemon become stronger in moments of stress and sickness?
kolicious 10:36
I think it depends on the person, that way if someone wants it do, they can XD
36:44
But my potential Jinn totally slips back onto his instincts when he's stressed out
sappho13 10:37
See, that's how my brain works.  XD    I think that way.
kolicious 10:37
For him, it isn't a daemon inside-- he's got all these urges and instincts from being a Jinn, but he doesn't see them as being necessarily bad
sappho13 10:38
*nods*
kolicious 10:38
Which is why I think the degree of the Jinn taint depends on the individual character, and how much the mun wants to play with that angle
39:19
I mean, the Jinn *have* to have functionality if they've survived all these years, you know?
sappho13 10:39
It can't be a constant struggle.
kolicious 10:40
New Jinn? I can see that being super interesting to tangle with
tatterpixie 10:40
Oooh, seriously!
sappho13 10:40
Oh, yes. To reach that stasis point.
kolicious 10:40
But Jinn that have been alive for a long time... I just don't see how they could survive very well if they were constantly battling themselves
tatterpixie 10:40
Yeh, there has to have been an internal status quo reached between the Geld part and the daemon part
41:25
A kind of Mexican stand-off over the soul
sappho13 10:41
There has to be some kind of internal set of rules for each individual.
kolicious 10:41
I'd just hesitate to call it daemon though, because it isn't even full blown daemon
41:39
I just call it the inner-Jinn in my head XD
tatterpixie 10:41
Heee XD
kolicious 10:41
I wish we had another word for it, so people weren't getting confused
tatterpixie 10:42
It's the taint of a daemon, isn't it?
sappho13 10:42
It's... A super Id.
kolicious 10:42
X3
42:44
That turns you into a werewolf XD
tatterpixie 10:42
Heeee XD
kolicious 10:43
Ah Kingdom. You are a game of surprising depth
tatterpixie 10:43
It is! <3333
kolicious 10:44
I'm going to post this up on the Jinn thread, btw

So to get us all on the same page, I figured we could use this to figure out what that innate Jinn is. We're trying to figure out what we can present people as the model Jinn so they can put their own spin on it. Ren mentioned making a chart, and I think that's definitely going to help things along! I had thought about making a few categories for the Jinn to be under (Vamps, Shifters, Sibyls/mystics, Body Snatchers, etc), but I'm not sure how everyone feels about those categories.

So consider this your thread to sound off on your thoughts on the Jinn, any questions you have, and any ideas you really want put into this emerging group <3.
